The Davenports: More Than This – A Captivating Sequel Worth the Hype

After reading the first Davenports book, I was hooked. When the second book was finally released, I couldn’t wait to dive in,and it did not disappoint! Much like Bridgerton, I believe Netflix should adapt this series. It has all the makings of a hit: rich history, captivating characters, and enough drama to keep audiences glued to the screen.

Set in 1910s Chicago, The Davenports More Than This transports readers to a time of monumental change. From the shift to automobiles and the rise of Black entrepreneurship to evolving societal norms, the setting brings history to life. Through the eyes of the Davenport family and those in their circle, we witness personal growth, ambition, and the challenges of navigating love and identity in a rapidly changing world.

A Closer Look at the Characters

Ruby Tremaine

Ruby, now preparing to marry the love of her life, Harrison Barton, has come a long way since the first book. Her journey to independence is inspiring, as she faces obstacles from her parents, her future in-laws, and even new characters who complicate her life. Despite these challenges, Ruby’s determination and growth shine through. By the end of the book, I couldn’t help but feel proud of how much she’s evolved.

Amy-Rose

Amy-Rose is a complex character who elicited mixed emotions from me. On one hand, she’s a strong, hardworking woman determined to turn her dreams into reality and prove she’s more than just the Davenport family’s maid. On the other hand, her overthinking about her feelings for John Davenport frustrated me at times. While her self-doubt holds her back, her courage to branch out and create a life on her own makes her one of the most inspiring characters in the book.

Helen Davenport

Helen is as bold and unconventional as ever. She refuses to conform to society’s expectations, which makes her journey fascinating to follow. Though her stubbornness sometimes leads her astray, it also helps her achieve what she truly wants. Without giving too much away, Helen’s story features both romance and ambition, as she fights to make a name for herself in a male-dominated world.

Olivia Davenport

Olivia, the eldest Davenport sister, is deeply passionate about activism and improving the lives of Chicago’s working-class community. While she still carries some of the expectations of being a well-mannered socialite, her dedication to making a difference is admirable. Olivia is a budding leader and writer, and her story reflects the struggles of balancing societal expectations with personal convictions.

Why This Book Stands Out

What makes The Davenports More Than This so engaging is the way it intertwines history with personal drama. The detailed descriptions of 1910s fashion, the rise of Black entrepreneurs, and the societal shifts of the time add depth to the story. Each character’s journey feels authentic, with challenges that push them to grow in meaningful ways.

Final Thoughts

I’d give The Davenports More Than This 4.5 stars. While the ending leaves a few unresolved threads, it sets the stage perfectly for a third installment (which I’m eagerly awaiting!). This sequel introduced compelling new characters, maintained its historical richness, and gave us plenty of drama and romance to savor.

If you haven’t started this series yet, you’re missing out on a beautifully written story of ambition, love, and self-discovery. Let’s hope the third book brings everything full circle!
