I Accidentally Hooked Up with a Vampire by Jessica Cage

This is not Twilight,and it doesn’t even try to be. I Accidentally Hooked Up with a Vampire is far from it. Thanks to the author’s note, you’re clearly warned that there will be a lot,and I mean a lot,of blood mentioned.

I read Jessica Cage’s first book, I Accidentally Summoned a Demon, last year and found it very entertaining. I quickly became familiar with her writing style and realized that Jessica Cage writes some very spicy content. I’m going to be honest,she gets a little freaky on these pages, so be prepared for plenty of intimate moments. Like I said, this is far from Twilight.

This book doesn’t just focus on vampires,it has a little bit of everything: vampires, witches, aliens, and hunters…oh my! There wasn’t a dull moment in any chapter. From start to finish, it’s packed with action, and those moments will either have you laughing or clutching your pearls. My pearls were definitely clutched.

One thing I’ve noticed about Jessica Cage’s books is that they take you on a cosmic,and in this case, bloody,ride.

Whitney, the center of it all, is a character I liked. She’s a successful art broker finally seeing the rewards of her hard work. She buys a new condo with a beautiful water view and even gets a luxury couch to top it all off,only to be fired from her job. Now she has a mortgage to worry about and is scared to even enjoy her new couch in case she has to return it. From personal experience, I completely understood her fear.

Thankfully, Whitney is smart enough to have savings, and she has a close group of friends who support her. Those same friends are the reason she meets the vampire, Domino.

Now I have to admit,every time I read his name, I kept thinking of Domino’s Pizza. I’ve been craving pizza lately, so that didn’t help at all.

Whitney meets Domino at a party celebrating her friend’s movie announcement. He saves her from an awkward encounter with a former coworker who suddenly thinks he has a chance now that she’s unemployed. Domino handles the situation, and Whitney is immediately intrigued. He’s mysterious, but she feels comfortable with him right away. That comfort quickly turns into something more…a lot more…on the very first night.

Maybe it was the liquor, but Whitney becomes instantly hooked. What was supposed to be a one-night stand turns into something deeper,especially when she starts questioning whether Domino is even real, since her ring camera doesn’t capture him at all.

Domino is your typical vampire: he drinks blood, has lived for over a century (147 years, to be exact), avoids sunlight, has super strength, and is incredibly attractive. Sounds like Twilight, right? But not quite. In this version, vampires fall into a stone-like sleep during the day.

Things get more complicated when Whitney tastes Domino’s blood,and surprisingly enjoys it. Their chemistry intensifies, but there’s a catch: her blood is special. Whitney is descended from aliens, making her blood rare and dangerously addictive. If Domino feeds on her too much, it could kill him.

And of course, that kind of blood attracts trouble. Domino’s brother,the king, wants Whitney for himself, whether to exploit her blood or eliminate her entirely.

As if that isn’t enough, Whitney discovers her two closest friends have been hiding secrets: one is a vampire hunter, and the other is a witch. They’ve known about Whitney’s lineage all along and have been protecting her.

Jackie, the vampire hunter, was my favorite character. She doesn’t take nonsense from anyone,not even Domino. She’s tough, confident, and always ready to defend Whitney. Honestly, I felt like Jackie and Domino had their own kind of chemistry. I know that’s not the story, but I couldn’t help thinking a vampire hunter falling for a vampire would’ve been an interesting twist.

Lena, the witch, balances the group. She’s more gentle, knowledgeable, and comes from a long line of witches, even if she doesn’t fully practice her craft. Together, this friend group works well,they balance each other out perfectly.

I really enjoyed the plot. The mix of action and spice kept things entertaining. And with Ms. Cage, just know, you’re getting a lot of spice. I also love that she highlights successful, full-figured Black women in her stories.

One of my favorite scenes was when Domino’s brother shows up and chaos breaks out between vampires and hunters. That battle,and the twist at the end, was such a fun read.

That said, Whitney did have moments where she frustrated me. I understand that discovering vampires and alien ancestry is overwhelming, but there were times she felt a bit dragged out emotionally. I just wanted her to step into her power instead of hesitating.

There were also moments where the timing of the romance felt off. Even Jackie had me agreeing with her when Whitney and Domino got carried away in her house and caused damage. As a friend, I couldn’t do that to someone’s home,no matter how rich my partner is.

Still, the world-building is fun. You’ve got characters from Earth, space, and even hell, plus zombies. It’s a full-on supernatural melting pot. And let’s not forget Whitney’s cat…who turns out to be a dragon and absolutely hates vampires. That part cracked me up and reminded me of my own cat.

Overall, this book is fast-paced, entertaining, and packed with personality. I finished it quickly and enjoyed the ride.

If I had to choose between this and I Accidentally Summoned a Demon, I honestly couldn’t,they’re both fun in their own way. Maybe I’ll decide after reading her third book, I Accidentally Hired a Shadow Walker.
