Somebody’s Wife by Robbi Renee
Book Review
Book Overview
“Jemma had me at hello… but she was somebody’s wife.”
Dr. Ezekiel Green is ready for a fresh start in a new city after divorcing his high school sweetheart. What begins as a professional dinner with a future colleague quickly turns into what feels like love at first sight at least for him. Dr. Jemma Holiday is spirited, brilliant, beautiful… and another man’s wife.
“Doesn’t he know I’m somebody’s wife? Does he care? Shit… do I care?”
From the outside, Dr. Jemma Holiday appears to have the perfect life: love, marriage, and family admired by the public. But behind closed doors, her reality is filled with betrayal and suffocating monotony. Her marriage exists more out of necessity than passion. What was meant to be a fun night out with her sorority sisters unexpectedly becomes the one-night stand of her dreams or so she thinks.
So… what’s the worst that could happen?
My Reading Experience
Going into a reading slump in 2025, I didn’t have the time or motivation to sit down and physically read a book. My work life was draining, and I desperately needed an escape somewhere I could disappear into another world while still standing in my own reality, if that makes sense.
I wasn’t sure what to read. I even considered rereading the ACOTAR series again (which I wouldn’t have minded I fell in love with it during my first read), but that’s beside the point. I needed something new.
One of my followers posted about Somebody’s Wife by Robbi Renee and shared how much they enjoyed it. Lucky for me, it was available on Libby, so it felt meant to be. Since I didn’t have time to sit with my Kindle, I listened to the audiobook and I am so glad I did.
The narration by Jakobi Diem and Wesleigh Siobhan completely hooked me. I was weak at the knees. These two are incredibly talented narrators, and when they tell a story together, the connection they bring makes the characters feel real. Their storytelling is powerful, emotional, and captivating. They are officially my top narrators on Audible, and this book sealed the deal.
Thoughts on the Story
Somebody’s Wife is filled with self-discovery, betrayal, grown-and-sexy attraction, and Black romance. It brings an entirely new meaning to the idea of falling in love with somebody’s wife.
I love a good romance, and this one met my expectations. At first, I assumed it would be a typical scandalous story a man pursuing a married woman torn between two men. While that’s partially true, the depth of the story goes far beyond that.
Dr. Jemma Holiday may have been somebody’s wife, but she was married to a man who took her for granted, no longer desired her, and had a baby on the way with another woman. Dr. Ezekiel Green saw her for what she truly was a jewel and made sure she was treasured.
This book was the perfect way to end my 2025 reading year. It’s passionate, showcases Black excellence, explores heartbreak, and celebrates finding a new version of yourself.
Character Highlights
Dr. Ezekiel Green was hands down my favorite character. He is confident, emotionally intelligent, and intentional. He knows what he wants and leads with both his heart and his head. He saw more in Jemma than the perfect homecoming queen with an impressive résumé. Ezekiel represents what so many women desire: safety for the heart, soul, and mind.
Dr. Jemma Holiday is an intelligent, resilient woman who had to grow up quickly. She overcame obstacles as a young mother and wife while still in college and beat the odds to become successful. I truly felt for her. She spent much of her young life pregnant and married, striving to appear perfect in the eyes of her peers. Discovering that her husband of twenty years had been cheating and had a baby on the way would break anyone.
While nostalgia couldn’t save her marriage, Jemma remained secure in herself despite her battle scars. She embodies the strength of a Black woman who has endured and overcome many challenges. My only frustration with her character was how back-and-forth she was with Ezekiel, even when he consistently showed up for her. Still, I enjoyed her journey and growth.
Jemma and Ezekiel’s relationship reads like a true love song, intimate, passionate, and deeply emotional.
Final Rating
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4 out of 5 stars)
The storyline kept my attention from start to finish, with no dull moments. It’s well written, emotionally engaging, and absolutely worth the read, or better yet, the listen. I highly recommend the audiobook narrated by Wesleigh Siobhan and Jakobi Diem.
Fair warning: this story is very sensual, with moments that may have you clutching your pearls. The age demographic feels perfect for readers in their 30s and 40s, and it’s the kind of book that makes you want to revisit it again.
This was my first time reading Robbi Renee, and I’m definitely looking forward to continuing the series with Somebody’s Forever (A Grown and Sexy Somebody Series).
