The Year of the Witching
Book by Alexis Henderson
I first read The Year of the Witching during the Fall and Spooky season, but if you’re like me and keep the spirit of Autumn alive year-round, this book is a perfect read anytime.
This dark, atmospheric tale follows Immanuelle Moore, a young woman of mixed race living in the puritanical society of Bethel. Bethel is ruled by a ruthless Prophet, whose hidden agenda casts a shadow over its people. The town is bordered by the Darkwood a forbidden forest where four witches were executed by the first Prophet. Though their bodies are gone, their vengeful spirits remain, haunting the forest.
Immanuelle’s life is marked by the disgrace of her mother, who fell in love with an outsider—a Black man—and defied the rigid rules of Bethel. As a result, Immanuelle is considered an outcast, a living symbol of blasphemy. Despite this, she does her best to follow her family’s strict expectations and the oppressive Holy Protocol.
Everything changes when she is drawn into the Darkwood, where she discovers her late mother’s journal. The secrets within reveal a hidden truth that shakes her world and sets her on a journey to uncover the dark realities of Bethel and herself.
I give The Year of the Witching 4 out of 5 stars. It masterfully blends fantasy and horror, evoking the chilling tone of The Crucible, The Handmaid’s Tale, and The Scarlet Letter. Alexis Henderson’s vivid descriptions bring Bethel and the Darkwood to life, highlighting the stark divide between the community and the outsiders.
Immanuelle’s struggles with her family, society, and inner self are deeply emotional and relatable, making her a compelling protagonist. While I appreciated the intensity and complexity of the story, I do wish the Prophet had faced a different fate but that’s just my personal preference.
If you enjoy dark, thought-provoking tales with rich world-building, The Year of the Witching is well worth the read. Let me know your thoughts if you pick it up!
