1, 2, 3… Breathe.

 

1, 2, 3 breathe.

1, 2, 3 and… breathe.

 

Who would have thought that something so natural, something you do every day without a second thought, could suddenly feel impossible?

 

Breathing.

Just breathing.

 

It’s the hardest thing to do right now. Funny, isn’t it? You don’t even realize you’ve been holding your breath until the dizziness sets in, until your body is on the verge of collapse all because your mind is drowning in thoughts, emotions, and the weight of everything around you. You want to scream, but you can’t. So instead, you hold your breath. Without thinking. You hold it… and hold it… and hold it until your brain begs you, Please, give me oxygen.

 

So you count. 1, 2, 3… and breathe.

 

Now, even breathing needs instructions. Something that should be automatic, effortless suddenly requires conscious effort. It’s supposed to just happen, but instead, you let the world steal your breath away. Again and again.

 

And now all you do is 1, 2, 3… and hold it.

And hold it.

And hold it.

 

Instead of simply… breathing.
